Project Management

Having a project manager is very important in my opinion, or at least having some kind of management period is useful and important. What is interesting and sad is PM is very important to have and understand, but explaining that to someone in school is very meaningless. There is no point in trying to convince someone that PM is important because I strongly believe that people, smart people, will come to that conclusion on their own.

I never used to understand the importance of PM before, how it can not only organize your work projects, but you personal work and life projects as well. I used to get all bent out of shape when I would write down a list of things for myself to do and I wouldn't get all of them done fast enough. I didn't set expectations and I didn't attach a time metric to any of my tasks, I would just assume it wouldn't take long... eventually not taking long translated into 2-3 hours which I am sure was too long.

My other realization is, if an office is not using PM then they don't know how to gauge anything. Same with me, I have about 3 projects that I want to do simultaneously. They never get started and it is all due to the fact that my weekends are not accounted for. I don't block off time correctly for the weekends. The week days are mostly shot because I am tired and now with my longer commute, it seems even more dim that I will get anything done during the week. Therefore, I decided to just use PM to organize everything. I will setup tasks, phases and other things with the amount of time it should take and I might even track theoretical cost.

This should be a fun experiment.
