I have, seen/ heard about, numerous cases where a person has gotten a job, worked the job their whole adult life then retired happily.
I have seen the opposite too and I am sure people have heard about it or seen it. Someone gets a job, works their job and is laid off when they are too old or obsolete to be replaced by someone younger and cheaper.
This is something that I have kept in the forefront of my mind for a while now. I am worried about this and I have posted about it before. The few things I have going for me is that I don't feel that people owe me anything unless I work hard for it and I am very easy to work with. I am self motivated most of the time and I have the drive to learn, aka: self educate.
I will keep going at something until I achieve it usually. I strive my hardest to learn about pretty much everything in my field. I don't want to be replaced by some young piece of crap who doesn't know anything. I used to be a young piece of crap who knew plenty but was struggling to find a job. I am very sure I never replaced anyone who didn't deserve it. Every time I fill a position I am praised and missed when I leave.
My point is, stay sharp, keep your options open and never give up. Otherwise you will degrade and that is no one elses' fault except your own. People don't like hearing the truth, but I think people need to know when to throw iin the towel and quit. I think it is very wrong for a person to be wasting everyone elses' time and money when they can't get their job done.
Just because a person is nice doesn't mean they are competent. No matter what personal problem they have or any amount of children they need to support. Their poor life decisions should not control the health of a team or its efficiency. Inefficiency costs money and fucks over moral which breeds resentment.
